I want smaller steam that was still used up to the transition ear. 0-6-0 Switchers: The 0-8-0 will be great for main classification yards, but samller switchers were used in smaller yards, industry switching and transfer runs. 4-6-0 (Modern): They were light enough to be used on most trackage, so on some roads (like the NP) the lived longer than heavy mainline engines who were replaced by diesels. 4-8-4 Northen variants: The available Northerns are not really satisfying for the majority of modellers: Bachman 484: Technology is dated and uses disk drivers CC 484 S2: Huge driver diameter (80"), so not rewally usable for anything else Bachman J: Tiny drivers, so not usable for anything else... A great choice for a Northern could be the Timken 1111 "Four Aces", built by ALCO in 1930. Though it was a one of a kind engine, is was test run on 14 different railroads to prove the concept of roller bearings on driving axles. The roads include: New York Central Pennsylvania C&O Erie New York, New Haven & Hartford Boston & Maine D&H Delaware, Lackawana & Western Lehigh Valley Nickel Plate Chicago & Alton Missouri Pacific CB&Q NP It was considered a very handsome engine, plus it was purchased by the NP and used as Class A1, number 2626 until 1957. But decorated as 1111, with the script "Timken" on the tender and 4 playing card symbols on the numberboards it would be correct for 14 roads ) Cheers Dirk
If wishes were horses, kitbashers would have to find something new to try. My wish list Diesel, 1) GP60M / GP60B 2) New run of Kato BNSF corrected C44-9W (4 side window cab) H2 & BNSF Warbonnet 3) GP60 4) GP50 5) C40-8/C40-8W 6) SW1500 Mechanism preffered - Atlas 4 axle, Kato 6 axle. Steam 1) Pennsy J1 2-10-4 (just because I like them) 2) Some extra tenders for heritage trains (ie UP ex turbine type) 3) UP FEF 4-8-4 (I reckon athearn will have this comming in the next few years) 4) Redone LL Berks with either more weight or tractions tyres, DCC & sound.
My list: Steam 4-4-0 American (CW era, that's SCALE) 4-8-4 Northern (Common driver, boiler, although I'd settle for C&O 614) Diesel AS-16 or DRS 4-4-15
I'm all for Kato making: Both the Hiawatha F7 4-6-4 Hudson & 4-4-2 Atlantic streamlined steamers and with complete matching passenger car sets.
SD40-2 and GP38-2, Phase III versions (angled blower housing). Mostly useful for CP/SOO. Anything at all with a Canadian safety cab. Any heavy electrics.
BNSF16 -- Oh yea, I forgot about the GP60M & 60B! I wonder is Life Like is ever going to release more GP60s? They did a great job on that model I think -- it would be awesome if they released some more road numbers and even better if they surprised us with the M and or B!!
A 'modern', higher drivered (sixty eight inches or more) ten-wheeler. A nineteenth century ten-wheeler A USRA heavy pacific A decently operating nineteenth century eight-wheeler (sorry, B-mann's needs much improvement) USRA light pacific that is better than MP's USRA light mikado that is better than MP's A twelve-wheeler A decapod A prairie A Baldwin road switcher (must have a token diseasel). Oh, and did I mention that N scale needed a higher drivered ten-wheeler?
What is needed is old stuff, C30's, SD45's, U30's,etc. We have the older units already made instead of a ACe or something, eventhough I am dying for one (a bunch), Take the old units like a tunnel motor or a switch engine and paint them in modern railroad schemes like with all the leasing companies, Progress Rail, LTEX, FURX, etc. Maybe do units in a rivate scheme like for grain elevators or other companies, Cargill GP9, ADM SW something. maybe some mexican railroads. What's needed is some short lines. maybe. Well that's about it for now until I think of more for another spur of the moment typing as fast as I can frenzy.
Thought of one more that someone (probably Kato please or someone who does replacement shells) should do. SD70MAC with flared radiator.
GE 44 tonner Glad to see this mentioned. These little beauties were owned by a huge variety of roads as well as a variety of lineside industries. It adds a lot of operating potential to be able to put one or two of these at work in a lineside industry, such as a coal tipple or grain silo. From the Model Railways Shunting Puzzles website (highly recommended), here's a nice photo of a Bachmann HO 44 tonner in action: --Bryan
I would like to see: SDP40F GP60M GP60B DD35 A & B units More EMD switchers - both sw's and nw's SD50F SD60F
1. ALCO S-1, S-2s 2. EMD SW1500's 3. GE U30B's How about a locomotive that can run on almost any layout with a theme after 1950's. Prototypically correct for US and European layouts. Locomotive type was built by BOTH ALCO and EMD satisfying hard core brand loyalists. The type can be found in many varied paint schemes across the country on numerous shortlines and tourist roads. Can operate on standard and narrow guage track. What you say, this type of locomotive does not exist............ The ALCO/EMD MRS-1! Initially built for the Navy, Air Force and I'll take mine in US Army black and gold.
There's such a great selection now, I'm having trouble keeping the budget under control ;-) The new heavy 4-8-2 about to be released should be a great addition. I'd also love to see some traction tire axles available for the Bachmann 2-6-6-2. This beautiful, albeit, anemic puller could be a GREAT engine with a traction tire option (like Kato's Mikado). I will add my enthusiastic "me too!" for a modern 4-6-0 and 4-4-2. I'm very appreciative of Model Power's 4-4-0 and 2-6-0 offerings and would like to see some more (with traction tires).
Every year my PRR-talk mailing list/Keystone Crossing web site polls PRR modelers for their top three desires in each of many categories. In November 2006, the N scale top desires were: STEAM: 1. H8s / H9s / H10s 2-8-0 Consolidations 2. K4s 4-6-2 Pacifics 3. I1sa 2-10-0 Decapod ELECTRIC: 1. P5 series 2. GG1 [Pre-announced by Kato] 3. E44 DIESEL: 1. BP20 Baldwin DR 6-4-20 "Passenger Shark" 2. BP60 / BH50 Baldwin DR 12-8-30 "Centipede" 3. BS24m Baldwin RT-624 centercab Not on the above list, but one I sorely feel the need for, is the EMD SW1. However, with DCC and tractive effort mandatory, we all know why we don't have these yet!
Walthers/Life-Like is releasing a Heavy Mountain (see Wig-Wag's site for details). DCC factory installed too.
