Sorry Martyn, but I love 31's (especially one named Spalding Town ) They were the first diesels in our neck of the woods for both passenger and freight. Also like the 56's - but I do agree on the 455/8
Those Santa Fe CF-9's make me look the other way in shame knowing what they used to be, a happy-go-lucky F-unit.
Inasmuch as the CF7s are ugly, I DO have two of them in HO scale- both are part of my fictitious ONERail fleet. They're kept company by a GP7 I modeled to look like another Santa Fe cast-off- chopped nose, "Topeka" cab (which looks Gawd-awful, IMO) and all.

With the recent KCS Green Goat thread, I need to amend my list. And add that unit. It just looks like they forgot to build a complete engine. Boxcab E50
I was glad to see the new "green goat" made the list. I nearly lost my lunch over that one. Most boring loco of all time would have to be the GP38-2. It's like a mid- nineties Ford Taurus- so common, I don't even look anymore.
I tend to like ugly engines. Switchers especially. Just can't get enough of them. Frankly, the biggest problem with N scale is the lack of "ugly" switchers.
ANd here I've got a slew of chopnosed Geeps- of course, I also have some unchopped Geeps (mostly Frisco GP7s).
Nil I don't think any locos look ugly, maybe a little weird, but not ugly. The only locomotives I don't like are some of the British/European-based multiple units that are found around the world due to cololnialism, and some of the same-influnced diesel engines, like the Class 31, so bland and ugly (OK, I guess there are ugly locos). :shade:
Wow no one said the AEM-7? The chrome Amtrak Toaster Oven? I always hated those things. The AMD GE's remind me of the old Ford Aerostars vans.
VO-1000 is the ugliest. I purchased one (Milwaukee Road) recently for my N layout. The more I look at it, the more I dislike it. It's for sale!
Growing up in Europe, most of the European locomotives look good to me and I had to adjust to the US style. I cannot speak for everybody over there but most of the people in Europe feel that a Ferrari design looks much better than a Cadilac. http://www.railfaneurope.net/pix/ch/SBB_CFF_FFS/electric/Re460/MySwitzerland/460078_220901-6rp.jpg I love the above engine. Of course it also has something to do that I assembled some of them while I was still working in Switzerland.
BL-2 (Yuk!) I just read this thread for the first time and I knew that when I clicked on it I would find the BL-2 mentioned. Nothing worse that that thing to hurt the eyes. mg: Charlie (and not a fan of the BL-2)
VO1000's ugly? Not a chance! If you want ugly, try this: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/acl/acl37awc.jpg Tom
Interesting to note how one's preferences change. In the ten months since I started this thread, some of the engines I listed have grown on me. I don't mind C420s or most Baldwins anymore, and I actually like a number of boxcab electrics.
