Let me ask a stupid question, what if you put one traction tire on one wheel on one axle and the second on the other axle but on the opposite wheel. huh....

The AZL wheels have a groove set into them for the traction tire. This way, the tire does not extend further out than the wheels on the other trucks. Without heavily modifying the axles, it would be difficult to do one traction tire per axle and one without.

I think the solution is double-heading locos. I am a firm believer in double heading. If you run two locos back to to back, you solve the problem. This way, one loco has the traction tires on the front, the other on the rear. It is the best of both worlds. Also, it gives you lots of traction and pickup. I run all of my SD70s and GP7s this way. I also have know to triple head but that is more for the look than the power.

Robert, that is what I am trying to do. Notice that there is a traction tire on the front and rear axle.

Rob, I like to double engine as much as anybody, but not all trains are double headed. On small sidings, there just isn't room for two engines, and the SD70 is used for switching also. You are not going to send two SD70 for a little switching job. The way the factory installed traction on the SD70, its maximum tractive power is going on reverse. I still need to change to switch the position of the traction tires if I want one the engine have the maximum tractive power going forward on a two engine consist.

You want more traction for switching ??? Doesn't make sense. How many cars are you shuttling on those short spurs or I guess more appropriate, what are you having trouble pulling out of the swamps ?

Jeff, the SD70 has problems shoving 8 FR PS2s when the traction tire is not on the right axle. As you know, I dont have a big layout, so I have tight curves with grade and switches. All those factors create a lot of friction.

Nice module Jim, I can't wait till summer to see it!

I am also starting a new module. I hope to have it running at our September or November show. I call it the Paradise module, because it is shaped like a pair of dice!

Yes, the coal loader is a little something in the works. As for the module, I am planning a center backdrop so I can have 2 different scenes. That's the fun part about Z-Bend Track, with the modules so high, a view block only needs to be 7-8 inches to effectively hide the other side of the module, then you can have 2 completely different dioramas on 1 module. :D

I notice that Robert. I got fake out in your time saving module. I thought the trestle was on another module. Thom did the same thing with his yard module. The back side looks completely different.

As good it looks, I am kind of dissapointed. I was hoping something I could paint in CSX colors. :c Neverless, still another great kit.

Working on a new DCC and DC test track:

Using a Power Cab and a Zthek DC controller. Each track has a source selector switch. Three types of tracks to show off difference of U.S. and European tie spacing and, Micro-Trains Micro Track pre-ballasted track versus self ballasted flex track. (That is the Märklin/Peco in the front)
