I was sitting here thinking about the intermodel train I am trying to build up and I got to thinking, what do the majority of modelars like to run? Intermodel, mixed freight, unit trains, 10 car local's, passenger speacails, etc. I would say my favorite type of train to run is mixed freight. Wether the train is 10 or 60 cars, I love the look of all different kinds of cars going down the tracks. Next up I would say unit trains and intermodel are a tie. So, what about you...... ------------------ Craig Martyn Best Looking Models Around Custom detailing AND N scale detail parts. BLMA N Scale Detail Parts BLMAinfo@aol.com

I like intermodal, but I love to see the grain trains snaking through the Fraser canyon in British Columbia. I also like modern "car" trains. The tall colourful units look great. And, I know this is terribly uncool, but I love some of the graffitti on the cars. Even the rail road police in moment of honesty admit some of it is pretty spectacular; something the "transition" modeler's can't do. I use gel pens for graffitti and I plan on getting some graffitti decals. One day, I saw a particularly great peace on a freight car so I took my son to see it. He laughed and said he probably had one of the few dads on the continent who admired graffitti and took his son to show it. No I am not encouraging him to do it; it isn't his thing or mine, but some of it is real art.
WHEN Kato (and now Con-Cor) releases the new Amtrak equipment, I'll be running Passenger trains like crazy again! But for now, it's any type of modern unit or stack train. Life is full of choices, for me it's ALL MODERN! ------------------ Brent Tidaback, Member #234 BNSF Railfan-to-the Max and a N-Scaler to boot! Ship it on the Route of The Roadrunners! Anything unit (coal, autoracks, straight double-stacks, worm trains, grain trains). I like to run anything, but I like the unit trains the best, then intermodals, then a general manifest. Locals are a different style of running. I love to switch, so I like to run them too. The others are primarily point-to-point. So basically, there is nothing I don't like to run! (Including passenger - the UP excursion train!) ------------------ Corey Lynch Pres - Rensselaer Model RR Society, NEB&W RR http://www.rpi.edu/~lynchc/Railfanning/railfanning.htm - My Site http://www.union.rpi.edu/railroad/ - NEB&W
If it rolls, I love it !! I guess I like mixed freight, locals, through passenger, local passenger, and coal drags in that order . But I have to say, I never met a train I didn't like !! All trains count? Being a Chessie fan Coal is natrally my favorite. ------------------ Theres no such thing as having to many coal hoppers or GP40-2 when you model Chessie System LONG LIVE THE KITTEN!!! As I'm not currently in running order, I'll just vote for what I like to WATCH run... and will run when I finish. 1) Intermodal... they just look so darn cool on a high speed, banked curve! There's nothing like standing 20 feet from the track and watching (and feeling) 4 SD90s blast by at 70mph with a long string of double stacks... now THAT'S power!! And yes, I live near CP's mainline. Excuse me... I think I'm drooling 2) Unit trains... Canadian Grain Cars (the cylindrical ones) and coal. My future layout has an intermodal facility (with a ship if there's room) and a steel mill. Lots of containers and LOTS of coal!
I would have to say Intermodal, but more TOFC than stacks. Though you can't beat the color variety of a nice stack train. I also agree with previous post a nice long autorack train sure looks nice on my 1/2 finished layout. Now I just need to stop buying new power and cars and finish the scenery. Sure takes away from the realism when the train leaves the desert to the great land of blue foam [This message has been edited by bmalonef45 (edited 25 January 2001).]
My firt choice has to be TOFC, followed closely by double stacks. Next, mixed, then unit trains (coal or grain hoppers). But like others have said, I like running or watching ANY train, and especially like operating and switching locals ------------------ Alan Curtis. Moderator. I re-read your post and like a student reading the test question too fast made an assumption you were talking about freight only. My Favourites are passenger trains, I love the present day VIA in stainless steel, the old CN green, black and yellow passenger cars, followed by the the blue and black CN/VIA passenger cars. I wish manufactures in N scales would start putting out modern inter-urban equipment so I could run commuter trains on my layout. I also like the Amtrack train coming into Vancouver, BC. Actually I love just about all passenger goodies including RDC's.

You guessed it. My favorite train to run is STEAM!! ------------------ Watash #982 "See you in the Pit"
I'd have to say I like running long unit grain trains and of course intermodal. I'm still awaiting my order of roadrailers wich I'll run with two sets of Alans spine cars ------------------ Regards Paul #1-Moderator & Member number 50 SPAD Investigator #1 ICQ 61198217 http://users.bigpond.net.au/railroad2000
I'm in HO, but this topic covers all scales.I like running very long freights, with a combination of steam, steam and diesel,or diesel power. I usually put pushers on the back to keep the train from pulling itself off a curve. It's fun to see how much torture I can give the Kadees! BTW, I was reading a book about the Western Maryland which mentioned the precautions they had to take to keep from pulling a train off a curve. So if it happens to you, relax, it's prototypical! ------------------ Trails to Rails!
My favorite train to run is a mixed freight, hoppers, boxcars, centerbeam flat cars, all being pulled by a pair of SD-35's up the steep hill from Augsburg to Wittenburg (4%). After that, as soon as I can get the couplers adjusted (arggggggggggggggg) I will have another favoirte...an F40ph pulling a MHC and a couple Amfleet coaches. Jeff Augsburg & Concord R.R. (a fictional shortline in Central Illinois) http://acrr.rrdepot.com
I'll have to go with Intermodal's first followed by unit trains. Of course any train is a good train! ------------------ Richard Turney
I'd have to go for a mixed local freight from the days when it was powered by steam or first generation Diesel power, there were 110 Class I railroads, not 7, and cars were a mix of wood, steel, tall, low-slung, with ages from brand new to 60 years. Lot more variety then. To me, nothing is more boring than a unit train or a doublestack.
