These would look sweet behind my Challenger. Made from tenders from retired Challenger and 4-8-4 Northern engines. Any body have a 4-8-4 tender they would like to get rid of? Well, two actually.

Q used these things too. Sorry could not open pictures..anyway I am looking too. Soon Märklin steam will be a dime a dozen and you could use Mike tenders with couplers mounted on both ends. Aspen makes a nice brass tender, I tried to make one, but my brass skills are lacking. I think some people have used Märklin heavyweight flatcar wheelsets to replace the brass ones on the Aspen kit. Another thing railroads did was mount tender bodies on flatcars and used them as water tenders.

Hallmark had some Christmas ornaments, one was the tender of a GE Veranda gasturbine engine. You might find still one on some well known auction side from time to time. Was very close to Z gauge

I have found this site to be useful for older ornaments. Sometimes you can find deals here. Looks like they even have some of the Freedom Train items left.
This year's ornaments appear to be N scale. They do make nice ornaments if you don't mind the "Lionel Lines" road name.

Found the tender on the site regarding the huge river in Brazil. Ordered one @ $9.99 new and $6.91 used.

Garth and I replaced the wheels with Fox Valley Models as the Hallmark wheels aren't Z gauged. Taks a little trimming but then they roll SWEET.
The coupler box is also easy to convert to AZL or MTL.

Dave, wazzup with the nose diving Challenger ? Or is that an optical illusion from the curve.

It is the curved track and the boiler swinging out.

I converted my tender using FVM metal wheel sets and 905 couplersto ready to run on z gauge track. If you need any pictures be happy to supply them. It was an easy conversion and I use it behind my powered version of the Veranda turbine.

Some pictures would help. Others may want to do the same thing. For one, how do you get the truck off (oooh... he said "truck off"!)?

here are some pictures of my modified UP tender I tried to upload pictures but I get an error and can not see how to delete stuff to get back inside quota limit. and load the pictures I want to attach. Drag and drop but photos I want are not in drag list all very confusing. Do not know if this me post stoke or what but could not includer what I wanted.

I got the MTL 3 axle passenger trucks. They look perfect - but too long of a coupler extension. At the back of the coupler box is a notch. I cut the coupler off even with where the connection turns up. This leaves a small ledge on the back of the coupler. Then I cut off the extension on the truck just to the left of the two small circles. Then glued the coupler back on to the truck. The coupler ends up at exactly the same level as it was before.
Before the cut on the top. After the cut on the bottom.

Then the coupler sticks out less.

But the bolster also sticks down too far (on the left). With a cutting disk, I cut it even with the frame and/or the detail parts on the bottom (they stick down the same amount). Cut down bolster on right.

Before on the bottom and after on the top. FVM wheels in there now. Used the original screws from the car and had to drill a deeper hole in the bolster. This is plastic and is easy.

    Close enough for me.
