Ummm John, frankly I apologized & then it seemed like it was turning for the worse. Inkaneer seemed to take it for granted and it grew on from there. As for me I have moved on and this subject is still open.

I've got to side with my boys from Pennsylvania on this one. It is silly. I had tried earlier to post on this discussion, but lost my post somehow. Anyway...........Let's get back on track.

well I will never agree with that BUT will agree with the posts that pointed to HO as being the best for THEM. SO why did I choose N scale? Was it the small size? No, I have a triple decker (4 if you count staging) 12X18 N scale layout so HO, S or even O could have been done. As far as money goes its about the same per square foot but with a small hedge to HO. No the real reason I went with N scale was/is challenge. I noted with a smile the poster who mentioned N scale was for babies...I must admit this sorta heated me up. The neat thing about N scale is most anything you want CAN be built BUT you can't just buy it off the shelf like you can in HO....to the person that mentioned N scale doesn't "run" all I can say is the 70's were a LONG time ago! Try running a Kato Dash 9 or SD80/90 and tell me they don't 'run', to the same person O scale has not been exclusively 3 rail for a while (time warp!).

HO leaves endless possibilities in most directions and for those that don't want to model its definately the path of least resistance....N scale pushes a modeler to fine detail and good tracklaying skills, has an evergrowing selection (but only if you aren't a steamoholic) and offers that GREAT senery to track ratio
I see it much like the Chevy/Ford or Williams/Ferrari debates each has their strengths and weaknesses.

    Thanks for readin' my rant!

So, N sacle is for babies, eh?

Lessee..... I'm on the cusp of 45 years of age, married with 4 children, a modeler for 25 years in both HO and N scales, and pretty darn tolerant of all scales. I have no problem with those who stick with HO, but I went to N beause of space limitations. The locomotives made today run and run well, and detail parts are just now coming out for N scale. As it was back in 1980 when I went to HO, I have to modify and repaint what I want for my N scale layout.

I still have a lot of HO stuff, and I'm keeping it (it's mostly Frisco locomotives and rolling stock, as well as code 83 track), but I'm going to N to keep my hand in this hobby.

There's lots of room for friendly competition, but not name-calling.

    Highball, y'all!

Wow.....I read the rest of the posts and for a minute I thought I was in Trainorders or the AOL forums. Personally, the folks who are bagging on each other need to go off this forum.

Now, I can tell you why I chose HO back in 1980:

I did so because I wasn't happy with the offerings
of N at the time. Also, the local midel RR club had an HO scale layout, so in order to run on that layout I had to get HO. For 21 years I learned how to paint, superdatail and run HO scale locomotives (had to, not many Frisco diesels out there). I also learned how to paint & decal freight cars to get what I wanted. I did the handlaying routine for track, and laid ready-built components from code 100 to code 70.

As time went on, I eventually wound up in a situation where I had litlled decent space to build an HO layout, and my wife didn't want my layout to dominate our bedroom (and what is wrong with THAT, you ask :D ). So, after doing my homework, and researching the N scale offerings now available, I switched to N scale (the missus happily endorsed this move). The HO layout is disassembled (sorry StickyMonk :D [IMG] ), awaiting another day when more space is available. I've got the HO locos & cars out to run on our club layout. Does that make me a dual-scale modeler? Sure, why not? I know the advantages and disadvantages of both scales, and deal with them.

So, that's why I chose HO back then, and N scale now. So enough of bagging on each other- we've lost one good individual already, and I'm not too full of respect for two others. Outsiders see us as playing with toys, and if you really want to boil it all down, we are. It's no different than
playing with R/C planes or cars. I don't get hung up on how I practice my hobby- why should anyone else? It also helps to think (read: engage brain) before we type a post to this or any other forum. God knows I'm guilty of that offense, so I'm pointing a finger at myself.

So to quote Rodney King, "Can't we all get along?"

If anyone wants to toss rocks at me, please do so off - forum. Let's keep it clean here.

Since some N scalers seem to call HO scale "Horribly Oversized" then we HO scalers shall call N scale "Nerds scale". This isn't a rude comment or anything like that, it's just that I'm proud to say that I model in HO & scratchbuild in HO. And my ideas or my thinking isn't flawed the way someone else's is, and you all know who I mean! Sure some of us have our differences & sometimes get on each other like a wild pack of dogs, but the motto should be "Model Railroading: Where the adult can be a kid & a kid can be an adult." Does this make any sense to any of you? Or does the words "N scale is for babies" mean anything? By what I meant N scale is for babies I meant it in a meaningful way. Sure it's small, small enough for babies & small children to handle & play with. But for the serious modeler it's more like a tiny universe where the adult CAN be a kid making them go back to their childhood.

I'm sorry if anyone was offended by my saying that "N scale doesn't run" I guess that was an oversimplification. I didn't say it to belittle anyone that models in that scale, but N scale just doesn't do what I would like it to. What I actually should have said is that N scale doesn't run to my satisfaction. Granted, there have been great strides in the reliablilty of some of the locomotives, and if it ever reaches a point where I am satisfied with the operation, I would get more involved in it. But, it has not reached that point.<hr></blockquote>
No offense- I thought N scale engines were crap back in the late 1970s, too! :D However, it's gotten better. Just stick around!
And oh yes, the HO scale engines have also improved over the past 20 years as well. It's getting better for everybody, and will continue to do so. But if you want to stay in HO, no problem here- plenty of room for everybody at the table! [IMG]
