Thanks, Ben--I am shelving the GP40-2's for now; GP40-2 thread has the details why. basically, the Atlas GP40-2 is a cobbled mess of phases. I fund this out AFTER I painted the engine. Lucky for me, the long hoods are always black for D&RGW! The GP40 needs cab numbers on the opposite side, and end stripes. Then "F"'s on the sill, and builder plates.
Hemi, All rivet counting aside they look GREAT! In the end it's your layout and up to you if you want to model them exactly like the prototype. I personally would decal the units up and let them cruise the layout. Ben
I thought about it, but I have a couple very gracious TB folks sending some scrapbox shells my way--I plan on a fully-cooked kitbash. Heck, you may even see it in a future issue of NSR mag!
The SD50's are nearly done, as is the GP40. Pics soon! The 3130 will be a 2008 project. Look for it here!
What brand of paint are you using for the Grande Aspen Gold? I assume this is the earlier Gold rather than the later KC or Anshutz Orange right? Josh
Josh, I used Modelflex Grande Gold. I also used the N Scale Supply special run Microscale decal sheet to letter and stripe the engines. Its Grande Gold color is a dead-on match. The Modelflex paint also matches nicely. I also have the Grande orange, but that's only correct for the latest engines like the ex-Conrail GP40's, and GP60's. I dunno if the SD50's should be in the more orange tint color or not, but they look Grande in Gold!
In looking at the Rio Grande Society they say the SD50 was delivered in the "Anschutz" Orange. http://www.drgw.org/reference/paint2.htm Josh
That's correct. I didn't have a paint mix recipe or decals specifically to match. I have the KC orange decals, but those are too orange. It nearly matches the factory-painted Atlas unit I have, FWIW.
That's the hard part when visitors see the engines sitting in the yard or in a 4 unit lash-up and they say things like "hey those engines don't match!" ARGH! After about 20 times hearing that, I just say "hmmm that's weird" Josh
Especially when you SPECIFICALLY mixed the paint to a different hue for that very reason. It's a Geep (Jeep) thing! Some folks just don't understand..
