So if I understand right, it's really a UP caboose. Strike that from the "interesting projects" list.
i haven't really been looking at this to keep up but your first one looks like one that has been hiding in cheautou, ok (not sure of spelling) on a siding before entering the mid america industrial park. it looks great! i may have to bookmark this and try and do it myself later (my home road hooks up to mopac plus i have a dcc mopac b30-7), would be a great addition to my fleet for sure!!! beast
Except for locomotives and a few other special instances (like passenger equipment), UP still uses the reporting marks of roads it has absorbed for accounting's sake, and for the fact that if they tried to re-badge everything with UP marks, they'd run out of numbers very quickly. That green caboose looks like its wearing UP-style MOW green, likely done well after the MP-UP merger. UP has assigned some of those MoPac SBW hacks to MOW duty for hauling crews from site to site, with the green paint to help signify the new role. Well it is numbered MP7501 so I'm assuming it is MoPac </font>[/QUOTE]
Here is the next caboose I am going to kitbash. I have started with a microtrains wooden caboose and sanded the sides back. I also used some plastic to cover the extended vision windows and puttyed the main windows in preparation for painting. Here is a pic of the caboose before I started, I will take more shots later today to show progress. By the way this caboose was orginally purchased from my good friend Flash Blackman
The next two shots show the shell after putty has been added to seal the windows. The second photo shows the EV windows covewred with plastic ready for painting The final photo shows the caboose after painting The question I ask is, should I seal the paint after decaling with dullcote or a gloss seal considering the prototype looks very shiny?
...eeeeeeh, what a "happy" looking caboose ! nice work Paul you are showing us, very nice. I am not "in" in caboose but your work is looking great...
Paul, Some one told me lonnnnnng ago. Gloss should not be used in nscale. At all. Ever...Can't remember who it was, but I seem to remember respecting his opinion a lot... Besides, real life is just not that shiny! Very often...
Paul, I'd second the dullcote. I'd also suggest another light coat of red before you go further, just to even things out a bit. You might also think about Testors clear satin - I've used this semigloss a few times on autos, and it provides a decent shine without looking too toy-like.
Ok I'm in the middle of decaling, can someone tell me would the yard transfer decal be on the same end of the caboose on the other side or diagonally opposite?. I dont have a pic
Ok still have not finished but have taken some shots of the already decaled side The next shot is a comparison with the caboose I started with. The next two shots show the 4 customised cabooses I have so far. I still have at least two more different cabooses in the pipeline possibly 3
That is really a great kitbash, Colonel. You have changed a wooden caboose into a steel one! What was the putty filler you used? Thanks. I may make an imaginary Espee yard caboose.
colonel from the few caboose pics i have it varies on where to place the yard transfer decal, i think they just painted it on where they had room on the protos. many were not fit for road duty so i would assume they were not really worried where it went. my opinion is place it diagonal from the other,
Thanks for the comments guys, Flash, I use humbrol filler which is really easy to use. However I didnt putty the sides I just sanded them back. Mitch, Ok i'll install them diagonally
