A roof shot would be best, or a good side shot. The ones I have I can't tell what the antenna is sitting on. Is it on it's own base, or is it on top of the steam generator exhaust stack?
You've probably seen these or similar shots, which are somewhat inconclusive as to the exacty position. The fantastic spread on SP SD-7's in Joe Shine's "SP Into the 90's" has a few roof shots but they're all of units without the wagonwheel. http://ncespee.railfan.net/spsd7/sp1425.html http://ncespee.railfan.net/spsd7/sp1415.html It's looking like the forward part of the cab roof (center) judging by a shadow of the wagonwheel cast on the vent bell housing in the first photo. Still looking around.... Russ
Yea, those are like the shots I have. It's hard to tell if they are behind or on top of that bell housing. Keep looking!
Actually, this shot makes it look like the wagonwheel is mounted atop the bell housing. You can make out what looks like little mounting brackets around the bell.... SP 1442 at the yard Russ
Same shot, a little bigger. http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=35480 This one show it off-set. http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=42463 Jason
Yes, I'm also finding some where it clearly looks offset. It appears likely that not every unit had these installed quite the same. Russ
I believe it is mounted on a four-legged platform about 6-8 inches in diameter. That is what it looks like to me in the last photo posted by Jason. Much better pictures are available on caboose roofs. (I assume it is the same device.) Gold Medal Models makes this item in the Alco PA1 detailing kit. I presume it appears to be mounted on the bell because the legs are so hard to see if the photo is not clear. Check this picture. from this page. Many more pictures.
on 1426, it looks to be mounted on the roof, and not on anything else http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=42463
SP antenna Jerry, This photo is off George Elwood's Fallen Flags.org site. I know its a GP9, but the mounting should be the same. It appears that the wagon wheel is mounted on 3 or 4 stantions which are in turn mounted directly on the bell housing. There is also a bar just below the antenna, this might be the mount. Hope this helps, the locos you're doing look good. John C.
try espee.railfan.net, or google SP 5623 the wagon wheel is above the steam genarator I made the mistake when I modeled 5623. you can get the wheel from GMM PA set
Great info Nick.....one excellent photo right from the top of the cab. Thats where I am going with mine.
