My dreaded task went by with out a hitch!! Er.. well, besides spilling silver enamel on my crotch. Once the paint dries, I'll go over it with a dusting of white-gray pastel chalk to give it an old dusty look and hopefully lighten up the paint a little. I love the look of the GHQ example (see end of post), so that's what my goal is. Here's the GHQ demo piece.
John, is this the FreeMo group in LA? I saw the layout in Anahiem and was impressed. Got a few of us in Bakersfield thinking about it. Mark, no crying over spilled paint... Looks good! Now you need some crates for the back of the truck.
After I painted the blue, the windows are silver enamel, applied carefully with a sharpened toothpick point. I then used another sharpened toothpick point to go back over the blue to clean up the edge.
Hi Art, we are based in the INland Empire (San Bernardino and Riverside) for the most part. There are some members from other areas to. We all try to make our modules resemble that area. We will have a larger set up on June 5 & 6 for the Big Train Show at the Ontario Convention Center. Hope you can make it. http://www.bigtrainshow.com/ See my signature for a link to the freemo club.
First attempt at backdrop painting..... Since I'm no artist, I had no idea how my first effort of painting a backdrop would turn out. Painting this backdrop became a priority so that I could permanently install my East Portal section into my layout Read loads of scenery books and referred to photos of the range I was trying to represent but I've never been one to focus too much attention to a backdrop but rather just give the illusion that something extends beyond the back of the scene. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out & it is certainly better than plain blue sky but I might add some snow caps to the distant mountains? I just used acrylic paints sponged on to the lower less visible ridgetop > then flicked the brush up to represent a tree line and finally hand painted the individual trees Anyway, like I said I'm no artist but this was my first attempt > now I can get back to modelling.....:tb-biggrin:
Geeee zus, another major understatment! lol.... I was at Rouse Hill today, was going to ring & see what you were up to,now I know,I should have rung.......looks the goods Steve,as usual! Have you seen the latest Prospector? All the goods on DRGW cabeese & painting F units lol, typical huh....
You should have called me, was only workin on the layout....but then again if you did call past I might not have got donewink:
No artist? This is hands down the most effective mountain backdrop, the most realistic trees and blending, that I have EVER SEEN. I grew up driving through the Cascades, and I simply could not believe how realistic you made this mountain scene. I have not been in the northern Colorado Rockies, so I went to look at some photos of the Moffat Tunnel--and yes, you captured it exactly. I can only hope to emulate you.
Thanks guys for all your comments, Funny how we are overly critcal of our own work - I thought I might have done better, but you guys have convinced me that what I've painted is OK Only thing I can recommend - paint a backdrop before the scenery goes in. I was lucky that this scene was a removable module thanks once again Steve
My diner table, uh, work bench was today occupied by my oNetrak modules. I had to solder the wires to the track. I just hate that kind of jobs......
