I just airbrush over the whole track, especially industry trackage. After ballasting I airbrush again to dirty up the track, various colours depending on usage of particular areas.

I've used Floquil paint pens with good success. I believe they're now sold under the Testors name, in a 3-pen set. I bought mine at the local Hobby Lobby, and have put 'em to use on my Arthur Sub.

I normally paint the rails, then the ties using Testors paint pens, with different colors for both.

Decided I didn't like the latest structure as part of the food processing plant and have now included the building as part of the brewery

Since I decided on a corn silo I am thinking of changing the car loads to corn shipped in PS2 cars then unloaded, the product will be corn syrup to the brewery

The question is do I lay a second siding to separate delivery of corn and the distribution of corn syrup?

    Paul:

The quick way is rattle can flat dark brown. Paint the rails and ties the same color.

Better to use the dark brown as a primer and paint the rails a separate rust color. Then paint the tops of the ties some light gray for very worn ties to leave them dark brown for newer ties.

Even better is to use an airbrush after that and add rust along the rails and on the ties. In some places the rails should look like they are just resting on the top of the ground; you can't really discern the ties. A little air brushed grimy black is always good to tie things together.

Grass and weeds on top of all that helps some, too.

So I would decide how prosperous you want each industry to look and design your track (and scenery) accordingly.

Thanks Flash, I think I will use spray cans as paint for airbrushing is getting more difficult to come by and would need a fair amount compared to a few spray cans at $3 each

Today I had a long operating session and was able to resolve an issue i have had since I first operated, my Athearn Genesis GP38-2 would hesitate across certain switches and the diamond crossing, after soldering the joints, cleaning etc it still hesitated then today i just realised to check the loco and guess what? Its only picking up power on one truck not the other lol so nothing wrong with the track work I'll have to pull down the loco and take a look albeit it is brand new.

I have also been tweaking my switch list program and but changing how often a industry is switched will also affect how many cars are being held in the yard. So far so good and a few more operating session I should have it operating with enough cars being serviced by the interchanges and yard.

Sorry for no updates for the past few months, over Christmas I have had several operating sessions and am happy with the total operation very soon I will be removing all cars etc to begin scenery. Today I weathered some of my beer cars

I was wondering what had happened to your layout progress. Guess it is a good thing to check operation before finalising scenery.

Yes Alan I have been operating the layout a great deal, just finalising a few things and waiting for cooler weather to start scenery

Today I airbrushed all the track work then commenced adding ballast etc to the yard area. The switch levers have been painted to reflected the lay of the switch with green being normal and red being reverse

First section ballasted I used N scale ground cover as it is finer to replicate yard ballast

Will need to start adding roads soon, what width should they be and whats the best way to construct, these will be concrete or asphalt roads for industries. I am thinking using styrene but any advice appreciated
