I work for a company called Invoke Systems (now merged with Acquisent) as a Senior Integrator (consultant). We are partnered with Altiris (who was just acquired by Symantec). Currently I hold a certification as an Altiris Authorized Consultant. Previously I worked for 6 years at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, starting as a Helpdesk Consultant and moved to Desktop Support in a semi-management role. T

I work for a company called Bangor Metals. We build cabs for mining trucks, forestry equipment, as well as engine cabs for EMD, National Rail, and Norfolk Southern. I'm an electronic/mechanical assembler on the EMD domestic cabs specifically building and wiring the engineers control stand.
Temporary laid off from the construction industry (home builder) because of a down turn in my companies sales! Now working for the government (well getting a government check and not doing anything)
I "retired" from Safeway as an OTR driver 5 years ago after 12 years of service. I've been concentrating on running Southern Alberta Rail, both the layout and the company ever since. I consider myself a starving artist with an understanding wife who keeps me in the lifestyle to which I've become accustomed.
1977 - 2004 (27 years, 4 months, and six days but who's counting) in the USMC and USA, retired as an OH58D Maintenance Test Pilot on 30 September 2004. Started working for Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) at Fort Rucker, AL writing aviation related tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) after retiring from the military and I am still with them. Will probably continue working until age 55 at which time I will have the house paid off, God willing.
I started my career as a welder while still in high school working for a company that made commercial door hardware, then worked as a machinist / welder, ran a medium size machine shop for a few years. Opened a body shop that specialized in the repair of Corvettes, graduated to a full blown fiberglass parts manufacturing business specializing in parts for the transportation industries, did not like that and got out of it. Went to work for a fortune 500 company working on boilers, liked it and have pretty much continued with it. I am working on a large Ethanol Project with my family, hoping to brake ground in a couple of months on the first of 5, 100 MGY plants. As of now I am between projects/Jobs (as of yesterday), however when employed I work as a Power Plant Construction Project Manager, overseeing work on large coal fired boilers, specializing in installation of pollution reduction equipment as well as Plant/Boiler Maintenance and construction. I hope that gives a little insight on what I do.
Before this gig as the Design Engineer for Micro Trains I worked with Disney Imagineering and other Disney internal organizations designing, sculpting and fabricating depending on the season and my mood! I like to think that all the things I endured in theme parks over the years led me here to what amounts a dream job. Very lucky, very blessed, especially to have the chance to meet all these new folks who share the same pasion I do for all things trains.
What great reading. This wonderful hobby has a wide diversity of great folks. I am a 33 year veteran of corporate America. Modeling took off like a rocket after my heart doctor told me what he did to relax. Having returned to school, by the middle of 2007, I will receive my doctorial law degree....Doctor juris.....and will be mentoring corporate attorneys on issues effecting board of directors. For those that are going to school or wishing to go to school, I think Nike has the best phrase "Just Do It", you will not regret it. I am 65.
About a year ago, I stopped consulting with the nuclear weapons complex, and joined a number of new ventures in the graphics display and CAD/CAM/CAE/PLM industries. That's Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Computer-Aided-Manufacturing (CAM), C-A-Engineering (CAE), and Product Life-cycle Management (PLM). I spent all of the 80s in those industries.
For the last 24 years I’ve been a commercial airline pilot. Wanted to work for the railroad since I was 4 but somewhere around my 18th birthday I got into a bit of trouble with the UP. Seems they don’t like people sniffing around their boxcars. I tend to carry a chip on my shoulder so went to work for the airlines (my second passion) instead. Since 9/11 the airline industry has taken a nosedive so now I’m second-guessing my career decision. I even looked into applying to the Alaska Railroad last year. I soon realized that, very similar to the airlines, you need to pay your dues for many years before getting into the catbird seat. 49-year-old bones don’t like to pound spikes and lift ties especially at 40 below zero. Also, I thought the airline on call system was bad, but the callout system at the ARR at least sounded absolutely abysmal. Guess you roll the dice with any career path you choose. As long as the house I live in has a train room I should consider myself blessed. Brian
I have been in the computer business for 40+ years as an engineer. For the last 20 I have been working as a Technical writer and am currently working at AAFES Headquarters in Dallas.
