Somehow I posted a flower pic, I didn't look at the file number close enough. Here's what should have been the 1st picture in the previous post.

    Karin,
They remind me of the wild wood weed we used to raise on our farm when I was a kid.

No wonder the sky was so blue.....

Joe, nice work on the barn. I also find laser kits lots of fun to build, but I am running out of real state in my small layout.

Karin, I am not the only z scaler that models CSX. :D

Nice work Joe! Yup, they are fine kits. Easy enought to build The roof is a real pain, but worth the effort. It gives a nice look, just time consuming. I thought about just using styrene and making a sheet metal roof, but, I thought lets give it a go.

I just finish another Eds Models PS-2 grain car. I like how their cars look, and I will order more, maybe with the round hatches. This will add some variety to my cover hopper fleet.

    Elgin Street Sweeper

I got bored on Sunday night and decided to make a street sweeper. Unfortunately, I had let my paints sit too long and couldn't get them to thin out properly, so I'm probably going to strip it and try again later with new paint. Anyway, here's my Elgin Pelican.

That's a neat project Dan! I don't remember what they looked like when I was a kid, I only remember phone booths were blue and white, and had a bell logo on them. Z :D

That's downright excellent. I wouldn't worry about the paint. Just add some weathering and it's a go. When is the last time you saw a clean street sweeper - or for that matter a street sweeper doing a very good job of cleaning the streets. Every one I ever saw just seemed to push the debris around a little. I think they could run for a "month" before they needed to be emptied.

That's off the wall thinking ! Neat. Speaking of walls, that's some great brickwork you have in the back. I just ordered all kinds of samples from www.clevermodels.com to see if their N scale stuff will work. They have some awesome patterns of every roofing and siding material.

The Pelicans have been around since about 1914. They looked about the same as mine from the 1940s through the sixties, and possibly into the 70's. There was one in my town when I was a kid. Actually two, but one was just used for parts. I used to follow it around picking up the steel bristles. They were about a foot long, flat, about .01" thick. The reason that I started thinking about the sweeper was because I was thinking how great one of those bristles would be for another project. I built it from memory, then did research on it. There's something wrong with that logic, I think. But, my dimensions turned out very close to the real thing, so, no harm no foul. They still make the Pelican, today. It's just a lot boxier looking.

The phone booths in my town were brushed aluminum with red panels (actual enclosed booth types) with the bell logo after the words "Public Telephone" in a band around the top. In 1976 we got the blue and white "cubicle on a stick" type.

The building in the back was from Downtown Deco. I bought it several years ago.

    Don,
It's not the dirty appearance that bothers me, it's the 3-D effect of the brush strokes and the lumps. I sort of like the dingy yellow.

    Jeff,
Have you tried to contact them and ask for a Z scale texture sheet?, maybe they might be willing to do it. Those interested in getting some if you send an email it might work. I could not find a contact email.

On the Road to a Pennsy M1 Mountain

I have wanted to make an M1(4-8-2) for quite a while. My first attempt was just the drivers from a Mikado combined with the pilot and leading truck from a Pacific. This didn't look good at all. The M1 had 72" drivers, so the Pacific was the obvious starting point. This is just a first run at this. If I can get the Mechanism to work well enough, I have the parts to make a second. For this one, I'm just using an extended Marklin shell. The front drivers are just dummies. I had thought about trying to gear it, but I don't have that kind of talent. I still have a lot of detail work to do on the shell and pilot. I also have to add some dummy valve gear and auto reverse stuff to cover up the front driver a bit. The mechanism travels the MT starter oval Ok. I'm using an old 3 pole loc, so, I might upgrade it to a 5 pole if everything goes well. For the next one, I will make a shell out of brass.
