Just wanted to chime in before I left town on vacation I can also make the tenth. I'll be back in town by then. Look forward to meeting some of you. Eric
Will be able to make both. As Hemi posted, I actually made it to Cheyenne on Saturday, despite some wicked rain on my way up, and a pretty good shower after I had arrived, and before trains were running again. Nothing else going on, so it also looks as if I'll be down on the 10th. Again, I'll ask about parking. Where do we park, free parking etc.....?? Look foward to catching up with fellow members!
It's now 3:40AM, July 3. Topic has fallen, and I've got more questions: 1. It's 1 week from meeting date. Is meeting still planned for next Saturday, July 10?? Discovered that I have a railroad club meeting that afternoon. But, I can head to Denver from there, so that will NOT be a problem. 2. Who will be there?? 3. What about parking where/free? 4. Camera for group photo?? 5. Possibility of something for "show and tell"?? An idea, not necessary either. More info appreciated. Thanks, Keith
Kieth, Not sure you'll be able to find any free parking in downtown Denver on a Saturday. I do know they reduced the rates on the weekend to lure shoppers back to downtown but I don't know what the rates are. Denver doesn't take their parking issues lightly. I was watch The Spirit of Colorado on PBS tonight and they were doing pieces on things made in Colorado. One thing they showed was the Denver boot. Denver gov't invented it and patented it. BTW, I am still planning on being there on Sat. Was a time decided on? I don't have anything else planned so any time would work for me. Eric
Thought I saw a comment on 5PM meeting time. I'm probably wrong too, as I just checked entire thread and CAN'T find a time now. Regardless, someone proivide a time and I'll be ready. Edit: Geeky posted a 5PM meeting time for the 10th. Includes directions. See middle of Page 3.
Geeky one is checking in. I will be there for a couple adult beverages and some grub. Saturday the 10th 5 pm. McCormicks corner bar in the Oxford hotel. Parking is tough on downtown, but one can always park free at a light rail stop and ride the rails into downtown Union station. Hows that for added railfanning fun? The Alameda stop is actually behind Kmart right by Caboose hobbies. So you could go to Caboose and then cruise over to light rail and ride to Union station.
Sorry to hear that. I'm sure we will have other get togethers. I don't know if any of you cross the scale and gauge line, but I am probably going to the denver toy train show thats coming up. I need to see if I can get some more lionel stuff for my Lionel setup.
I gotta get an address and directions, but I'm starting to think about heading to I-25/Broadway and taking Light Rail downtown. MapQuest to the rescue too!! Just need to figure out which stop I need. And if additional transportation is required. Will be there, eventually! Keith
Nothing official at this point. Is there going to be a specific seating area that those who show, will meet?? I will be there, even though I have all sorts of stuff going on earlier in the day!! Now, I need to get directions so I can pick up a southern Pacific locomotive seat from someone!
And I can only hope that this will become an ongoing thing - just found out this afternoon that I'll be unloading a train tomorrow. And since I have a bad feeling UP's involved (coming from Corpus Christi), there's no telling how things will go!
I'll be there. I think I will do the light rail thing as well but not sure yet. How are we going to know who we are meeting? Or should we do the blind date thing and wear a pink carnation or something . See some of you tomorrow. Peace - Out. Eric
I have to miss it (I'll be waving at y'all from the plane ) but if we do it again I may be able to make it
I'll have black shorts and a Rio Grande T-Shirt on. As well as a couple of items for show and tell, for anyone interested! Keith
Minutes for the DGRS meeting. The first ever meeting of the Denver Gentlemens Railroad Society was a great success! We accomplished great things in our short time together. I arrived a little early with my wife Alexis. I brought a railroad lantern and some Marx trains to have visible, a beacon of sorts if you will, so that other railfans would notice where the gathering was happening. A lone gentleman came in, proceeding to wander around looking lost. After he had bought himself an adult beverage I finally asked him if he was looking for railroaders. It turned out to be Eric. I was somewhat unsure of what railfans do when they get together since I have always been a lone wolf modeller. But after a few minutes of chit chat we managed to get onto the subject of trains. Eric is fortunate enough to be in a location where he actually hears narrow gauge steam engine whistles echoing in the mountains every morning, due to his location near the georgetown loop railroad. We spoke about that since I had actually railfanned the line with my wife, as opposed to riding it, the week before. I had not realized this was the railroads last year in operation. It also turns out that Eric and I have a very small degree of separation since his wife is a student at the school I work for. A short while later Kieth came in. I knew what kieth looked like, we met briefly at GATS, and he is hard to miss in a crowd, because he is a fairly large guy bearing a Rio Grande T-shirt. Keith brought along his six (qty 6 DCC decoder equiped *WOW*) Rio Grande tunnel motors by Intermountain. Nice looking engines. (Later I got to see Keiths SP engineers seat he had in the back of his pickup. ) We hung out for a fairly long time talking trains and occasionaly drifting into everyday things so that my wife could be included a little. The guinness flowed plenitfully might I add. And of course drinking guiness prompts talk about Ireland so we talked about travel abroad. I have to say it was really nice to hang out with train guys who could talk about all kinds of things. I like trains , but I like other things as well. I consider our first meeting to be very successful and I am sure all the other members will gladly come to future events. The fourteenth of August looks like a possible second meeting. We'll see how everyone feels about this. Anyone is free to join us. There are no rules or membership. All Scales. There is no hassle. Just train minded folks getting together for some inexpensive grub and adult beverages. As in all Gentlemens organizations, spouses are always welcome. On the sad side note: My house was burgled monday a little after noon. We lost my wifes digital camera kit and a DVD player. About 2500.00 overall. It is upsetting. And my door jamb is all splintered up. I am fairly happy though because those things are just things. I can always replace things.
Sounds like fun was had and I sad I didn't make it. Summer is just a tough time for this kind of gathering for me but trust me I will make one of these someday.
